According to the fine fellows at Rhapsody, Madvillainy, the only album released by the hip-hop duo Madvillain so far (MC: DOOM, DJ: Madlib), is the greatest hip-hop album from the last decade. While I personally don't hold it to that level, and I don't even think it's the best thing DOOM has ever done (THIS is), I will admit that Madvillainy is one hell of a unique album and a feat of creativity in hip-hop. For me, it's like the Paul's Boutique of DOOM's discography; my favorite album is the one that came before it, but I have to recognize that the follow-up exists on a deeper level than its predecessor. But one thing that frustrates many hip-hop fans who drool all over this album's greatness is that it came out in 2004 and we haven't heard much from Madvillain since, minus some demo tracks released from the Stones Throw label a few years ago, so when will we hear anything new from this villainous pair?
There are certainly many hip-hop enthusiasts out there who are craving for a new Madvillain album with the feverish intensity of a wolverine on crack (thanks to Chuck Klosterman for that simile) even though a full 9 years have passed since it was released. Wait. 9 years? That's almost a fucking decade ago. I'm getting old. ANYWAY, I'm not necessarily in the same school as those people, but I'm still eager to hear what DOOM and Madlib can offer us all these years later, especially since DOOM has said in recent interviews that THE NEW MADVILLAIN ALBUM IS FUCKING COMPLETED!
That's right! It's (allegedly) done! On September 6, 2012, DOOM co-hosted the BBC Radio 1 Show and said flat-out that the album just needed to be touched up and that it would be released by the end of that year. At the time of this writing, it's halfway through the next year. So where is the new Madvillain album? At this point it seems like no one is sure, and no one can be sure, maybe not even DOOM and Madlib. BUT, there is one DOOM project I'm looking forward to more than the prospect of a new Madvillain album, and that would be the new Ghostface/DOOM collaboration, the implications of which made my brain have an orgasm by just imagining what it would sound like. BUT, DOOM has stated that his collaboration with Ghostface will not come out until the new Madvillain album is released (by the way, if the name "Ghostface" sounds scary and foreboding to you, that must mean that you don't know who he is. In that case, please stop reading this article and sojourn to your local vendor of recorded music and purchase Enter the Wu-Tang. Afterword, don't forget to read the rest of this, comment, and subscribe :) ) So this goes back to the beginning of this post: when is the new Madvillain album coming out?
I was about to type that I'll bet it's coming out this year, but in actuality, I won't. Will it end up being the Chinese Democracy of hip-hop? That is a possibility, so to all you hip-hoppers out there, BE PATIENT.
